So my good friend John Vechey and I were sitting over at Ocho in Ballard catching up, discussing life and such as we seem to do on rarer and rarer occasions as we both get older. John notices something behind me and his face lights up. I turn around. There is the prototypical Seattle hipster sitting in the corner. Nothing too interesting. Then I see what John sees. He’s got a t-shirt on that simply reads: “She’s Not Coming Back.”
This simple t-shirt logo crashes directly from this pretentious hipster’s heroin collapsed chest directly into both our hearts, as if Lindsay Lohan had been driving it after a drug fueled night. This logo perfectly summarizes a certain diamond in the make up of both John and I’s personality; both as a lesson (yet) to be learned and a scar of history. We both look at each other and laughed knowingly. It’s moments like these that indicate the depth of a friendship. When nothing needs to be said. It’s like you’re participating in some weird quantum physics experiment where the same thoughts and emotions are simultaneously being shared between two separate minds.
In any case I quickly returned by to my Absinthe infused drink. Ocho apparently makes their own Absinthe in-house and the particular drink was delicious (the reason I know this is because I can’t remember specifically what it was). The logo kept swirling in my head. “She’s not coming back, she’s not coming back, she’s not coming back.” It was such a loaded phrase and had so much resonance. Phrases like these are awesome fuel for my song writing hobby. Every song I’ve written (all of three) has started with a phrase like this that has set me off on some autistic stemming that eventually evolves into some 3 minute Oasis tribute.
For the next few days I mulled over possible verses. Nothing really stuck or matched up with the chorus I needed to hit. I knew the general feel for the story of the song but couldn’t quite solidify it.
So here I am. As any modern lazy bastard such as myself would do I’ve decided to crowd source the writing of my song’s lyrics (e.g. you’re going to write it for me and I’ll take all the credit): Welcome to the First Annual CJ’s Friends Got Talent contest.
Here’s the rules: Write a song either based around the title or chorus “She’s Not Coming Back”. Throw it up in the comments below. I’ll combine as much of the entries together into something coherent and record and produce it. I’m guessing everyone has had this feeling or experience (either “He or She’s Not Coming Back”) in their own life. Now’s your chance to get a song made by it that I guarantee will sound like Noel Gallagher wrote!!
